Ways I learned to Calm a Baby as a Newborn Photographer | West Palm Beach Baby Photographer
Is it nap-time yet?
Whether you are a new mom or a seasoned mom you will learn that babies cry. It’s their way of communicating and sometimes it could be hard to decipher what could be wrong. Knowing how to soothe, handle, and support baby is an absolute requirement of any newborn photographer. Sometimes babies just need a little TLC to help relax them. Learning new ways to calm your newborn down can be a challenge. As a newborn photographer Ive taken many courses and worked with mentors on newborn posing and safety. Within theses classes I also learned new ways to help a baby relax and fall asleep. Here are three tips I learned to help settle a baby not only as a newborn but as your baby grows.
Swaddle
Tip one, this trick is specified for newborns. As you know before entering our world your baby is accustomed to things being warm and squished, as a photographers I learned to mimic this feeling with a stretchy wrap. When baby is in a wrap correctly with arms on chest and legs stacked they begin to feel secure and fall off into that peaceful sleep. You may notice in my West Palm Beach studio things get a bit warm, this is also to help baby become more comfortable in this new unknown setting. I also have a fan for parents to stay cool. Check out this tutorial video for a basic swaddle technique which is easiest for most parents.
Brush baby’s face
Tip two, Gently brushing baby eyebrows or nose, yes its that simple! If baby is having a hard time falling off to sleep I’ve learned that brushing baby eyebrows with your finger tip in the direction baby hair grows HELPS! I’ve used this on many newborns I’ve photographed even done this on a 6 month old baby.
Baby Soother
Tip three, Some babies arrive to their session unsettled and parents get worried that their session will not go as planned. During my time as a baby photographer Ive tried multiple avenues to calm a baby. As of late my handy dandy Portable Soother has help so much during my sessions. The Summer Soothe and Vibe Portable Soother is a portable soothing machine that vibrates and has different sounds that are known to calm babies. This product has rescued quite a few sessions for me. Just pop it under my prop or posing bed blanket and baby slips off into a nice calm sleep. Grab it on amazon here.
